DARCY

As time passed, the heat in Darcy’s face and neck receded. He was certain her discomfort matched his. Yet, she had not uttered one word of repudiation to his suggestion, nor had she complained at the odd solution to their problem. He was eternally grateful the floor had warped to be lower at the end where the soiled garment rested, or they could not be sitting where they were.

Once their needs had been seen to and they once again had their sides pressed firmly together as they sat on the floor, the dust they had stirred started to settle. He sneezed repeatedly. Then, she did.

He glanced at the light peeking from under the door. Slipping his fingers under the wood, he discovered the exit to be extremely thick, a relic from his uncle’s youth when furniture was heavy enough to need several strong men to relocate it should it be desired.

Approximately six inches from where his back touched the wall, his hand encountered the heavy leg of whatever obstruction held the doors closed. Apparently, the weight was on the top as the post was not excessively wide. Possibly a massive bed with a heavy headboard where the diminutive former master of Rosings Park once rested.

Having calculated their position by mentally retracing their path, he was fairly certain they were in the family portion of the west wing, in particular, the former room of his deceased uncle.

Searching his memory, he recalled the few times he had been inside the chamber. It was when Lewis de Bourgh was in the sick bed for the final time. Closing his eyes tightly, Darcy struggled to remember. Odd. The wardrobe had been situated against the northern wall in an alcove facing east so anyone entering the room would have only seen the side of the piece rather than the front. The bed, on the other hand, had been flanked by large windows on the western wall. As with all suites, there was an adjoining dressing room where the majority of the master’s clothing would be kept.

Hmmm. Clarity struck.

“Elizabeth,” In his excitement he failed to note his informality. “After climbing the two staircases, how many turns did we make?”

“Just one at the end of the second set of stairs.”

He agreed. “I believe I know why moving the wardrobe doors has been impossible.”

He could see in his mind’s eye her brow lifting and wanted to smile at the image.

He continued, “The turn placed us so we entered the wardrobe as it faced the opposite wall of an alcove. I believe someone pushed the bed and possibly other furniture into this same alcove, filling it completely, so any efforts to budge the door would be futile.”

“Oh, no. This is not good news.”

He was unsurprised her sharp mind had understood their dilemma.

“I believe we have been attempting to break down the wrong door.”

As one, they spun their positions and squeezed together as tightly as possible, so their legs could hit their entry portal at the same time.

“It is a good thing I regularly enjoy a long walk, is it not?” she chuckled.
